Wunderfolks’ Assorted Box of Six

Wunderfolks has been making rounds online for their eye-catching handmade tarts. Starting out as a home-based patisserie in 2020, the business has since opened a brick-and-mortar shop in Joo Chiat.

Behind this tart shop with almost 16k followers on Instagram is a pair you would never expect. The co-owners of Wunderfolks, Vincent and Dale, were not restaurant chefs, but are former regulars from the Navy!

After serving in the Navy, Vincent, who studied Game Development in university, wanted to pursue his true passion – baking! He enrolled in the Diploma in Pastry and Bakery course from at-sunrice Globalchef Academy, where he had the opportunity to learn and work in reputable pastry kitchens around Singapore.

Vincent then approached Dale, who has a Diploma in Business Management, with plans to launch a business together. They were initially venturing into a dessert table service but their plans were halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This obstacle created a new opportunity for them. As bakeries were forced to close during circuit breaker, friends and family started to approach Vincent for birthday cakes and desserts for special occasions. That was how the idea of a home-based business came about.

Among the various types of pastries they offered, the tarts were the most popular among friends and family. With their validation, the duo decided to focus their business on selling quality tarts.

In January last year, Wunderfolks opened their first store on Stirling Road. But in just six months they moved to their current location at Joo Chiat. “Our store at Stirling was too small, only one-third of our current size,” Dale mentioned.

With a larger kitchen space, their production capabilities increased. But even so, their tarts are often sold out before closing time at 5pm!

Two sizes of tarts available

Tarts at Wunderfolks come in two sizes, 8cm and 20cm. The larger tarts are available only in their signature flavours, Fruitilicious Mixed Fruit, Valrhona Dark Chocolate and Lemony Meringue. If just one flavour is not enough, fret not! You can try two as their tarts come in duo flavours too.

Their tarts are made in-house daily!

Wunderfolks prides themselves in having all their tarts handmade from scratch. From the dough and tart shell to its filling, every component is made in-house.

Vincent, along with a small team of bakers, prepares and bakes the tarts daily. With so much preparation required and minimal hands on deck, the quantity of tarts made daily depends on the number of staff they have for the day.

“We don’t want to compromise on our quality,” Vincent emphasised.

Their smaller tarts come in six standard flavours. In addition to the three signature flavours, they also have Lychee Tart, Maple Pecan Tart and Hey Sesame Tart. You can purchase them individually at $8 each, in a Box of Four ($32) or a Box of Six ($42).

From now till 31 March, the seasonal flavours of Matcha Adzuki and Coffee Hazelnut are available too. Order from their website before it is too late!

When asked about upcoming plans, the owners were excited to share that they are opening their second outlet at Wisma Atria next month! They also hinted at introducing new flavours along with their new outlet.

From sailing for months at sea to becoming owners of a successful tart shop, Vincent and Dale’s journey has been nothing short of amazing. Show your support by ordering their handmade tarts online or saying hi to them at their outlet!
